A fun Chinese New Year tradition is the "red envelope," usually given to kids and filled with cash. We're adapting this tradition for adults who have never had the chance to get a red envelope. If you want to participate, bring a gift card of $25 value and a sticky-note with a cryptic clue as to the nature of the gift card. Participants will then play "Chinese Yankee Trader" with the red envelopes. The Red Envelope Event will take place at 5:30.

Chinese New Year is called "Spring Festival" in China or 春节 (Chun Jie) in Chinese characters. Since China has a traditional lunar calendar, the date of Spring Festival varies from year to year in the Western calendar. There is a twelve-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac that, by now, most Americans are familiar with. 2012 will be the Year of the Dragon. Spring Festival actually lasts 2 weeks in China, and during this time, many businesses, especially factories, will close so that workers can visit their families. Plane and train reservations must be made far in advance. It is virtually impossible to travel long distances at the last minute during the beginning and end of the Spring Festival period.
